The following are our 2009 YH Winners:
Parker Pratt, junior at Northview HS, started his program, “Books for Soldiers” when he heard a news story about the difficulties soldiers face in Iraq. One of the soldiers interviewed spoke of the loneliness and boredom when there is down time. The project started in September and was completed for the Veterans Day celebration at school with Ft McPherson Army Base personnel and students loading the army vans with boxes of 3000 books. (Parker had been a “committee of one” with regard to planning, implementation and closure to the project but a strong leader who had many followers to make it a huge success. Each class had brought books to school to help create this soldiers’ library in Iraq that will be a gift that will keep on giving.
Zachary Eller, Northwestern MS eighth grade student, started his project, ‘Woof Em Down Dog Biscuits” to help rescue abandoned animals. His biscuits’ business has raised $8,000 for pet rescue. He has received numerous awards and has donated over 1000 pounds of dog food to local shelters. Zack started volunteering for a pet rescue organization and decided to bake homemade dog biscuits for the abandoned animals. Everyone liked them so much that he decided to try to sell some to raise money for the medical needs and food for the pets that were up for adoption. The biscuits were a huge hit, so they set up a website and were invited to participate in local events. All of the profits go to pet rescue
