Question: When did the Teaching Museum North (TMN) open and what for purpose?
The TMN opened in 1988 under the direction of Superintendent, Dr. James Fox, and the Fulton County Board of Education for two purposes. Foremost, the purpose was to establish a unique model for teaching and learning as an extension of the classroom through exploration and hands-on discovery. The late 80’s were emotional for communities with the closing and consolidation of so many small schools. The preservation of school histories through the archives program helped communities celebrate the coming of new schools and the many student opportunities that came with these changing times.

Question: What are the Hours at the TMN?
The regular hours are from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. We are open many other times for special projects such as student research, scout projects and events like Black History celebration, Saturday Science and for school/department staff meetings.

Question: How is the TMN funded?
The FCBOE financially supports the TMN with its location, staff salaries and $1.29 per student enrolled in a north Fulton public school to help with programming costs. The construction of all exhibits and the numerous special programs are funded through the museum’s foundation 501(c) (3) account and its many donors.

Question: How many students participate in TMN programs?
Approximately 55,000 students participate in museum programs each year.

Question: Is the TMN open to groups other than Fulton students?
Yes, many private and home schooled students and adults attend our programs at a fee of $4 per person. Visitors from more than 17 countries, many of our states and most of Georgia’s cities have toured the museum.

Question: Who are the museum stackholders?
Stackholders include the students, teachers, parents, school administrators, curriculum specialists, grade level chairs and school bus transportation personnel. The extended community is invaluable. Business leaders, elected officials, community and school leaders and parents serve on the TMN Board of Governors. Senior citizens, north Fulton families, local churches and businesses all play an important role with inkind and financial contributions.

Question: What is the process for program selection and development?
Teacher input, student and grade level needs aligned with test score results and the state standards guide our process for new programs. Our contracted teachers are renowned experts from metro Atlanta, most of whom have post graduate degrees. They help with the development of exhibits, scripts, costumes and pre/post activities.

Question: What is TMN’s focus for the future?
This year opened with a website that will eventually offer interactive programs and an after school student challenge bowl. Also, the TMN is focused on automation of its current history and government exhibits. The Young Heroes program is a partnership with Roswell Rotary that began in January ’09 and has its first winners announced May 2009. The new direction, science and math, begins with an extension of our current astronaut program and a sixth grade summer science camp.
